Troy University

The mission of the John W. Schmidt Center for Student Success is to provide programs and services that enhance Troy University students' academic achievement, personal and social growth, campus and civic engagement, career development, and persistence to graduation.

The John W. Schmidt Center for Student Success at Troy University is a comprehensive program that focuses on students needing academic support services as they transition from high school or post-high school experiences to the university experience, as well as during their university experience. This program promotes an understanding of and appreciation for higher education; provides programs and services that improve students' opportunities for academic success, personal, social, and career enrichment; encourages civic and campus engagement; orientates students to the University and its policies, resources and culture; and fosters the development of positives relations between and among students, faculty, and staff.

The CSS serves as a platform for executing Troy University's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP). An overarching goal of the CSS Program is to enhance student retention and degree completion. Ultimately, the program aims to assist Troy University students in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for success at Troy University, in their careers, and throughout their lives.

Testing and Assessment

The Center for Student Success testing lab is available for students who need to take the COMPASS placement test to determine the appropriate starting level in math and English. The COMPASS exam is usually taken during the IMPACT sessions (new student orientation). CLEP tests are also administered through the testing lab. → Testing and Assessment

Student Support Services/Upward Bound

Student Support Services is a federally funded initiative established to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students (low income, first-generation, and/or disabled college student). The coordinators and tutors provide academic tutoring, study skills instruction, counseling, instructional labs, and cultural opportunities. → Student Support Services

Career Services

Career Services helps students pursue work experience opportunities during their student years as well as prepare for entry into their chosen professions following graduation. The office assists students with resume development, maintains a database of available local jobs, hosts career fairs, and helps connect employers with Troy University students and alumni. → Career Services

First-Year Studies

The First-Year Studies Program (FYSP) at Troy University focuses on students who are making the transition from high school or post high school experiences to the university experience. Inclusive to the FYSP are University Orientation (TROY 1101), College Success Strategies (TROY 1103), and the Common Reading Initiative.

The Common Reading Initiative (CRI), part of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) involves reading a common book. During their TROY 1101 class, students read the common book and then participate in activities and discussion groups related to the book

Support/Tutoring Centers

ComputerWorks is an all-purpose computer lab for students. The lab contains computers and scanners that students can use for the completion of their academic work. Software on the computers includes the latest version of Microsoft Office. Computers also have Internet access for Blackboard and MyMathLab. The Coordinator and lab staff assist students who need help with the operation of computer hardware and scanners as well as navigation through software installed on the computers.

The Natural Science Center provides tutoring to Troy University students in the areas of mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics. Trained tutors work with students individually to help them master the information in science and math courses.

The Writing Center provides trained tutors who work with students and faculty to improve critical writing skills. Students at all levels across all disciplines are welcome to visit the Writing Center to become more effective writers and thinkers.

Office of Student Development

Professional staff members provide a variety of services designed to aid in the academic, emotional, physical and vocational development of Troy students. The Student Development Office consists of: Adaptive Needs, Conditional and Undeclared Programs and Career Services.

The Adaptive Needs counselors provide information about academic accommodations for Troy Campus students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504.

Service Learning and
Civic Engagement/Learning Communities

The office of Student Learning Initiatives is dedicated to promoting applied, active learning at Troy University. Academic service learning links course content with purposeful volunteer experience, allowing students to apply the skills and knowledge gained from the course in a tangible way that helps meet a community need.

Learning communities are small groups of students who share academic characteristics and enroll together in common courses during their first year. These communities provide an excellent way for students to meet other students and experience enhanced learning opportunities.
