Prospective Students (New Applicants and Guests)
The Department of Education will not make the renewal application process available for the 2007-2008 cycle until January 1, 2007. New applicants should apply after January 1, 2007.
All applicants should use the Web to apply for aid but paper FAFSAs can be obtained at the Federal number below. Use your PIN to complete, sign, and submit a 2007-2008 FAFSA on or after January 1, 2007.

What is the PIN?
The PIN serves as your identifier to let you access your personal information in various U.S. Department of Education systems. It's like the Personal Identification Number that you get from your bank that enables you to access your account. Because your PIN serves as your electronic signature, you should not give it to anyone.
Once you successfully complete a request, the Department of Education will e-mail or mail your PIN. It will take approximately three business days after you request your PIN for you to receive an e-mail notification with instructions on how to retrieve it electronically, or 7-10 days to receive it in the mail via the U.S. Postal Service.
When you use your PIN, you must type the PIN exactly as it appears.
Where can I use my PIN?
You can use your PIN at these U.S. Department of Education Web sites:
- FAFSA on the Web: Access and complete your Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- You may also use your PIN to electronically sign your submitted FAFSA
- Submitting corrections to your processed FAFSA.
- Obtain a copy of your processed FAFSA information.
- The National Student Loan Data System Web site: View a history of the federal student financial aid you have received.
- Most lenders under the Stafford Loan program and PLUS Loan program will accept the PIN to allow you to e-sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN).
Alabama Education and Training Voucher Program
The state of Alabama has a new program designed to help foster youth, emancipated foster youth and young people adopted after the age of 16 with the costs of attending post-secondary school.
The Education and Training Voucher Program offers up to $5000 a year towards tuition and eligible living expenses to former foster youth on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligible students need to be:
- Under the age of 21 (for a first time application)
- Enrolled in an accredited post-secondary program
- Able to show progress towards a degree or certificate
- Applications are available at www.statevoucher.org
