English as a Second Language and My Language Ability What are the ESL classes like? English as a Second Language features communicative style classes where students are encouraged to communicate in English. Because students live in an English speaking university setting, they are able to constantly practice what they have learned. The focus of our program is English for Academic purposes. Who are the teachers? The teachers are well trained, experienced professionals who provide expert instruction and individual attention. Outside of class what does ESL offer? ESL has a modern multimedia lab and a language resource room where students can learn what they want when they want. It also provides conversation opportunities where American and the ESL students interact to develop speaking, listening and communication skills. How long do I have to take ESL classes before entering the university? The answer to the question is different for each person. Some students are eligible for the Bridge program, which allows them to take regular academic classes and ESL classes at the same time. When is the English proficiency test given? The English proficiency test is given at the beginning and end of every semester. New students should arrive at Troy University two days before official registration in order to take the test. How high do I have to score on the TOEFL test? Troy University requires non-native English speaking students to score at least a 500 on the paper based TOEFL or a 173 on the computer based exam or over 60 on the IBT based exam. Prospective graduate students must get at least a 523 on the paper based test or a 197 on the computer based or 70 on the IBT TOEFL test.
