TROY - Brenda Johns, Associate Controller at Troy University, has won the University's Vergil Parks McKinley Award.

Johns, who has been employed by the University since 1997, received the award on Wednesday during a ceremony in the Trojan Center Ballrooms on the Troy Campus. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, presented the award to Johns, who was nominated by Tara Donaldson, Associate Vice Chancellor and Controller.

The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the University's athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $1,000 stipend.

"Brenda has proven to be a loyal, dedicated and hard-working employee," Donaldson said. "Her positive attitude and team spirit has carried her department and the Controller's Office through many difficult and complex process upgrades. Brenda sets a positive example for her staff and peers through her actions and words. The statement 'service before self' certainly applies to Brenda and that makes her a very deserving recipient of the McKinley Award."

Johns said she was surprised and extremely honored to receive the award.

"I am truly blessed to work at such a wonderful place as Troy University and to work with such a wonderful group of people," Johns said. "I couldn't do what I do without the people I work with, and this award is representative of the support and fine work of those around me, as well."
