Historical Sketch Johnny Mack Brown, former University of Alabama football star (Rose Bowl of 1926)
and star of 167 western movies in the 1930s-1950s, lived with his family in Dothan
prior to 1926. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a movie career.
In 2005, on the 101st anniversary of his birth, the City of Dothan created the Johnny
Mack Brown Film Festival and slated it to become an annual event.
At the first JMB Film Festival, held September 8-10, 2005, the extended Brown Family
returned for a reunion and to participate in a number of festival-related activities.
Seven members sat for an extensive oral history interview with Dr. Martin Olliff of

history in the Wiregrass and across the United States.
