Biographical Sketch: Amerigo C. Chiriaco (1930-2003) worked for the International Trade Commission as a Trade Analyst, publishing multiple federal documents while in this position. He traveled extensively through the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, and Africa. In many of these travels, he compiled lists of economic assets including flora and fauna. He compiled ca. 40 notebooks describing the roadsides he encountered while traveling various highways in the United State, which he correlated with highway maps in the collection. Upon retirement, Mr. Chiriaco lived in Slocomb, AL where he was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church of Dothan and the BPOE Elks Club. Chiriaco appears to have been a maker of lists.

Scope / Content: Contains files detailing Mr. Chiriaco's travels through the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Four hardcover ledgers record the books in Mr. Chiriaco's personal library. There is a postcard of a Joseph L. Chiriaco [relationship unknown], and a sample of Mr. Chiriaco's published government papers. There are lists with important economic products, broken down by global regions or by industry. Numerous lists are included on a variety of topics: Catholic Directory, mineral guides, encyclopedias of missions, guides on food and wine, the Yearbook of Agriculture 1937, colleges and private schools, etc. Files on various animal and plant families are present, but appear to incomplete due to large gaps in information or missing books. Some files provide lists of tribal societies and American Indian groups. There is a topographic map of the U.S. as well as various maps, pamphlets, brochures, and guides for Alabama and Florida.

Series 4, General Research Notes [31 Filer Folders]: Contains lists and notes for a large variety of topics (economics, lists, plant guides, tribal notes) with a focus on plants and economics.;

Series 5, Maps, Pamphlets, Brochures & Guides, ca. 1957-2003 [40 File Folders]: Includes U.S. topographic map and information focusing on Alabama and Florida.

Processing Notes: Notes and maps donated to Troy University in approximately 2004 by Charles Chiriaco, son of Amerigo C. Chiriaco. Attempts made in 2011 to re-establish contact with Mr. Chiriaco to gain more information about his father failed. No public information was located other than publication information of multiple books on trade and tax written by Amerigo C. Chiriaco. (See Chiriaco Publications). The processing archivists imposed order onto the collection and supplied file names that appear in square brackets in the inventory.
