Guide to the Tom Solomon Photograph Collection, ca. 1890-1979

Record Group 146

Date Span 1890- 1979

Extent 256 images

Biographical Sketch  Thomas W. Solomon, May 27, 1915--May 13, 1988, was a resident of Headland, AL, and according to his Dothan Eagle obituary of May 14, 1988,  a "well known railroad artist and train enthusiast."  Solomon served as a draftsman with the Atlantic Coast Line then with the Florida East Coast Railroad.  He was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church.

Scope/Content  Consists of Solomon's photographic negatives, transparent positives, and prints of railroading in the Southeastern US, particularly the Wiregrass.  Many shots are copy negatives or photographs of Solomon's paintings of railroad scenes.  Others are on-site shots of trains, yards, tracks, and other facilities.  The photos cover the Alabama Midland Railway, Amtrak, Apalachicola and St. Andrew's Bay Railway, Apalachicola Northern, Atlantic Coast Line, Bay Line, Central of Georgia, L&N, Plant System, Seaboard Atlantic Line, Southern Railway, and others.

Organization Item-level control.

Provenance Tom Solomon photographs given to Dothan Landmarks Foundation, Inc.,(DLF) as part of its historical collecting mandate.  DLF transferred the photographs to The Wiregrass Archives in 2005.

Processing Notes Scanned and assigned temporary numbers as part of Dothan Landmarks Foundation's authoring of Railroading in Dothan and Vicinity (Charleston, SC:  Arcadia Publishing, 2005).  Those images not scanned for that project were scanned in March 2009.  The Wiregrass Archives file numbers (based on Acc + box/item + file; in this case 146-05-0725-ITM-xxx) created in May 2009.

Preferred Citation  Tom Solomon Photograph Collection, RG146.  The Wiregrass Archives, Troy University Dothan Campus, Dothan, AL.
