[Fragment, possibly written between late April and late June, 1863]

Had been so the men is now going some on furlough    three for the first fifty and two for every additional 25_ which sends eight at a time_  but it is like going to the mill they have to take it as their turn comes_    and there is all of fifty a head of me which will probably throw me off until the middle or latter part of summer_    There is no foundation for the rumor that this company has been ordered to Vicksburg_     the Columbus Artillery left for that place last Tuesday_    and it is said that one more company will have to go_    there is five artillery companies around Savannah_     if such is the case it will be one of the five_     it may be ours or it may not_     if we should be ordered off I will write to you  immediately_     I am very well_     your in love

H. F. Scabror

Hiran will leave a package for you at Addisons

P.S.  Tell Mann to make a hat out of Polimetto and send it to me if you have any chance     If not keep it until I come home     I want it the same size of that old hat of mine that I left at home bound at the top wit red leather_    Brim the same width crown same height

Yours truly

H.F.S.

[N.B.  Dr. Martin T. Olliff, using the passage, "There is no foundation for the rumor that this company has been ordered to Vicksburg.  The Columbus Artillery left for that place last Tuesday," and conducting research on the "Columbus Artillery" in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, concludes that Scarborough wrote this between late April and late June 1863]
