Biographical Sketch:  Ms. Joan (pronounced Jo Ann and listed as Joe Ann in the census) Hand Harrell, 1909-1975, was born in or near Blakely, GA.  She was adopted (possibly informally) by a pair of siblings, and attended Moody Hospital School of Nursing in Dothan beginning in 1928.

Ms. Hand never practiced nursing, but traveled from 1930 to 1933 with her guardians throughout the US and into Mexico.

She married Brantley T. Harrell, ca. 1933, and lived in Blakely, GA.

Family story is that Joan was related to a Dr. Hand who worked at Moody Hospital and that her guardian, nicknamed Sissy, worked for Dr. Hand.  This connection led her to study at Moody.

Later in life, she volunteered at the Baker County Historical Society and rescued four bound volumes from being abandoned or destroyed through neglect.

Scope / Content: Four items document Harrell's time at the Moody Hospital Nursing School (1925-1928) and four come from Baker County Historical Society.

Provenance:  Documents created or gathered by Mrs. Harrell, then passed to her daughter who passed them to her daughter.  Mrs Harrell's granddaughter donated them to the Wiregrass Archives.
