Dr. Shannon M. Dadd

Dr. Shannon M. Dadd

Dr. Shannon M. Dadd is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at TROY. She teaches educational technology, science and STEM to all education majors. She serves as the department's Field Experience Coordinator, helping connect each education major to a mentor teacher in partnership schools. Additionally, Dr. Dadd serves as Chairperson on the Board of Directors for Alabama STEM Education.

Tailor your education degree to your career goals by choosing a specialization.
Theatre Education

Hone your skills in theatre while gaining experience in theatre education. The theatre education specialization trains you in performance, production, directing and more while providing real-world teaching experience. The only theatre education program in the state of Alabama, this specialization gives you a unique opportunity to exercise your love for theatre while learning to inspire that passion in your students.

Music — Choral Education
Discover how to cultivate and inspire a love for music and singing in the choral education specialization. In this specialization, you'll learn from talented musicians about topics such as diction for singers, vocal pedagogy, and voice and choral techniques. You'll also be introduced to the professional teaching skills and practices you'll need to earn your music teacher certification in Alabama.
Music — Instrumental Education

Learn to help your future students pursue their love of music. This specialization teaches you how to effectively mentor, teach and inspire students to master their instruments and perform in bands and ensembles. Following graduation, you'll be eligible to receive music teacher certification in Alabama. 


Visual Arts Education
Refine your art skills in drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture or painting while learning how to teach visual arts in grades P-12. The visual arts specialization includes a wide variety of art and education courses to effectively prepare you to teach students of various ages and learning styles. Following the program, you'll be eligible to earn art teacher certification in Alabama. 

Physical Education

Share your passion for health, wellness and sport with P-12 students. The physical education degree prepares you to teach sports, promote healthy lifestyles and influence student wellness as a PE teacher. Following the program, you'll be eligible for physical education teacher certification in the state of Alabama.

What can you do with an education degree?
A B.S. in education degree from TROY prepares you to teach at any level from preschool to 12th grade. You can tailor your degree to your career goals by choosing a specialization in theatre, music (choral or instrumental) or visual arts education. Specific teaching careers include elementary teacher, middle school teacher and high school teacher.
Do you need an education degree to teach?
Whether you need a bachelor's degree in education to teach depends on individual schools and state licensure; however, you will likely need, at minimum, a formal bachelor's degree in a related field or content area. If you do not have a bachelor's in education, there are various paths to certification, including a master's degree in education.
