Area V
Social Work
This major is available through the Troy, Dothan, Phenix City campuses, and through
TROY Online.
AREA I-V Recommendations
AREA I:
A grade of "C" or higher is required in Composition I and II at Troy University.
"D" grades will not transfer.
AREA II:
Students attending Troy University are required to take a sequence of Literature courses (6 SH) to meet Area II and/or Area V requirements. Students attending a community
college are strongly encouraged to take a literature sequence from the following to
meet this requirement: ENG 251/251(American Literature I/II); ENG 261/261(English Literature I/II); or ENG 271/272(World Literature I/II). If the literature sequence is not completed in Area II, you should complete the sequence
by courses selected in Area V.
Students attending Troy University are also required to take a Fundamentals of Speech
course. Students attending a community college are strongly encouraged to take SPH 106(Fund of Oral Communication) or SPH 107(Fund of Public Speaking) to meet this requirement.
When selecting courses from Areas II and IV, please note that at least one 6sh sequence
in either Literature (Area II) or History (Area IV) must be completed.
AREA III:
A grade of "C" or higher is required in the Math course chosen. "D" grades will not
transfer.
AREA IV:
Students attending Troy University are required to complete one 6sh history sequence. Students attending a community college are strongly encouraged to take a complete
history sequence from HIS 101/102(Western Civ I/II), HIS 201/202(U.S. History I/II), or HIS 121/122(World History I/II) in AREA IV.
Students attending Troy University are required to complete Sociology and General
Psychology in Area IV. Students attending a community college are strongly encouraged
to take SOC 200(Intro to Sociology) and PSY 200(General Psychology) to meet this requirement.
AREA V:
NOTE: MTH 265 or PSY 260 (Statistics courses) should NOT be completed at the community college. It is preferred that statistics be completed through the TROY Social Work program
courses.
The remaining 19 SH in Area V can be obtained at the community college by taking 19 SH from the following:
- ECO 231 (Principles of Macroeconomics)(3SH)
- ORI 101 (Orientation to College)(1 SH)
- CIS 146 (Microcomputer Applications)(3 SH)
- POL 211 (American National Government)(3 SH) - if not taken in Area IV
- ANT 200 (Intro to Anthropology)(3 SH) - if not taken in Area IV
- Free Electives (1-9 SH)
Troy University Baccalaureate Degrees
The student seeking a baccalaureate degree must meet the following credit hour requirements:
- A minimum of 120 SH
- At least 50 percent of the degree program must be traditional academic credit.
- No more than 25 percent of the degree program may be earned using portfolio based credit.
- At least 25 percent of the degree program must be completed with Troy University.
- Twelve (12) semester hours of work in each major field must be completed in residence
at Troy University.
